Communicate in order to influence # 3 – mapping past and future of the Writing Movement Network

During Lab 4 of The Writing Movement Network taking place in Riga from June 9-12, 2016 during International contemporary dance festival Time to Dance the participants tried to figure out priorities in their shared interests. On the first day of the lab participants chose 8 topics out of long list of different keywords, issues discussed, phrases said etc.that has been recorded over the whole year of activities. Then out of all the marked themes, 8 most popular where put into next stage – writing about them. Each participants had 8 minutes to write on each of the topics and then the notebooks got passed to next one in the group. At the end all 8 participants in the room wrote something about all 8 topics. After that each participant got one of the notebooks with 8 quick writings on one of the topics. The task was to somehow bring it all together, conceptualize, summarize and create a text (or some other form) bringing together all 8 voices. The themes dealt with during the writing experiment and also the long list of other ones recorded as part of the Writing Movement Network activities provide both insight into past and vision of the future of The Writing Movement Network. Communicate in order to influence

The collage written by Kamma Siegumfeldt

Yes. Hopefully. In many different ways. Poetically, by intriguing the reader, by pointing to relations, by putting things in perspective and context. By transmitting the possible messages of the art/artists to affect the world.

Juxtaposing a market-oriented setting by presenting other values, pointing to new directions, new thoughts, the un-thought, stirred by artistic utterings/manifestations. Yes, art speaks, art criticism speaks. Bodies speak.

COMMUNICATION IS ALWAYS TO INFLUENCE. A PERSON DOES NOT CHAT JUST TO CHAT. ARTISTS ARE DOING THEIR WORK TO BE SEEN OR HEARD AND TO MAKE A CHANGE TO THE SURROUNDINGS. VERY DIFFERENT CHANGES BUT CHANGES. THE INFLUENCE CAN BE SEEN AS SOMETHING HERE AND NOW OR SOMETHING MAKING CHANGES FOREVER.

CRITICS WOULD NOT WRITE EXCEPT THEY WANTED TO INFLUENCE THE ARTISTS OR THE AUDIENCES OR NORMAL PEOPLE.

I can keep my mouth shut and don’t say a word. If somebody is with me, I am influencing. I can stand still, lie down, turn my face to the wall, hide under the bed.

If somebody knows I am in the room I am influencing. If somebody knows I will come I am influencing. If somebody knows somebody will come I am influencing.

OK. Now I design a specific communication-influencing plan. And try to realise it. No idea if I will succeed because I have no idea about the plans of the other/others. Influencing if I wish or if I don’t wish. At the same time no control over HOW?

influence

Communication on facebook is referred to as putting your voice in an echo chamber or a mirror hall.

Communication in text is not the same it depends on framework context and timing.

The meaning of I LOVE YOU shifts its influence radically if it is the first time someone you love say it to you or if it is written on a soda can.

It aims at our emotions and communicate I LOVE YOU but as a receiver of the listened to or the read the impact creates perhaps different chemical reactions.

Let´s stay with the damn critic. If you have decided to be a critic, you want to influence something. The culture of your homeland perhaps? Of course, people could have different reasons for becoming a critic, f.ex. one important function in also writing critique as an art form. But for me, yes, influencing is really one motivation. Giving something to the world I live in. Sounds idealistic. But let this influencing be as tiny as it might be. It´s motivation and makes me happy!

I hope. In different ways. The profession of dance critic is permanent to influence. Our life is the grand process of influence.

IF YOU TALK, MOST OF THE TIME YOU WANT TO BE HEARD. AND after BEEN HEARD the next best thing WOULD PROBABLY BE – your VIEWS/OPINION OR WHAT EVER HAS BEEN SAID – BEING AT LEAST CONSIDERED. EVEN BY CONSIDERING SOME VIEWS YOU´RE BEING INFLUENCED , WITH something new or just a different perspective.

ART and criticism should communicate in order to influence and allow to get influenced. AS WELL AS ART and SPECTATORS, ARTISTS and SPECTATORS, CRITICS and SPECTATORS, POTENTIAL SPECTATORS AND ARTISTS etc etc etc

______________________________________________________________

In order to influence you have to communicate. Communication to me means that people who talk are open, they are in a state of mind that allows them to accept each others views. In this sense communication without influence is not possible. From that one could conclude that when I talk to someone I am always influenced by this person, I always change. All the ideas written in the notebooks are nothing more in the end than the reflections of ourselves.
