Writing Movement-Mariehamn: Contemporary Dance Discourse
Writing Movement facilitated a keynote in Mariehamn during the ke∂ja Encounter 2014. Curator and researcher Corina Oprea (SE) held the keynote followed by a discussion with all of the Writing Movement network partners in the panel. Oprea talked about the place and role of dance in public discourse and what language and stories are used when writing about dance. What position does/can dance take in the media as dance criticism slowly looses ground in the daily news outlets? Does this place greater demands on the discourse within the dance community itself? The limits of paradigmatic conceptions of dance criticism and writing was filtered through close regarding of recently published reviews and debate articles on dance in Swedish press, relating to both aesthetic and structural issues. The WM-partners talked about the different situations in their own countries and opened up for questions from the 61 people in the audience.
Corina Oprea is a Stockholm-based curator and researcher in the fields of visual and performing arts. She is currently finishing her PhD thesis at University of Loughborough-UK, examining curatorial practice as an exercise in collective knowledge. She writes occasionally about art and performance in a range of publications, among which IDEA, in Stockholm she worked for WELD and Intercult as curator/project coordinator. In her practice, she focuses on questions relating to the social and political context, modes of discoursivity and performativity in the public realm.
