Writing Movement seminar in Lithuania, “Šokis žodžiu – ne[w]kritika 2013”

For the third year International Dance Festival New Baltic Dance ‘13 will organize the writing project Šokis žodžiu – ne[w]kritika (Dance through word – not[new] criticism). A wordplay in the title “not criticism” vs. “new criticism” means that the project will look for the new ways how can we see, read and understand dance, how can we talk about it and analyze it by using multi-disciplinary knowledge and experience. The project continues its research on the new approaches to the dance art, searches for the innovative form of dance review, and at the same time tries to draw much closer to the dance creators and to the audience.

Critical discourse on and around dance in Lithuania is lacking a strong base – theoretical information and practical experience as well as a knowledge in dance criticism is still very fragmentary. Dance art is usually considered as one of the most flexible art forms, and therefore the criticism should be highly flexible, constantly searching for the new criteria. For these reasons the organizers aim to strengthen and to expand the genre of dance criticism, as well as to develop a new generation of dance reviewers in Lithuania.

Meetings and discussions will be mentored by dance critic Ingrida Gerbutavičiūtė from Germany and choreographer and dancer Andrius Katinas from Finland. Project guests are dance critic Inta Balode and cultural theorist and educator Ozoliņa Baiba from Latvia. The organizers will also invite participants of the festival (dance creators and/or performers) to talk about their ideas, creation process and possible ways of its interpretation. The program of Šokis žodžiu – ne[w]kritika 2013 you can find here.
